”I just want to make good music for the world and make people feel happiness…”
Kodie’s childhood timeline isn’t that of an average boy. In 1989, at the age of 5, his family fled the Iran-Iraq war with great despair and found reconciliation in Sweden. This allowed them to have a fresh start of a peaceful, renewable life together. As a young boy, Kodie encountered difficulties in stuttering, due to that he experienced a lot of bullying by his peers. With great frustration, he learnt how to box at the age of 9 so he could defend himself. Furthermore, he began rapping at the age of 12 and it was through rapping that cured his stutter. Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and 2pac were Kodie’s inspiration when he commenced Boxing and Rapping; which are two of his illustrious passions. He developed great respect and idolization for them.
Kodie and his long-time childhood friend Al Azif, who today is one of the hottest producer/DJs in Sweden, started a rap group called Pennybridge Kingz in 7th grade and kept it going for 10 years. In Sweden they toured many cities and built up recognition and acknowledgement from a lot of big names in the coalition of Swedish hiphop.
When gangsta rap was in its golden age and infinitely it’s prime; many rappers strived to be “gangsta” and portrayed themselves as tough and rugged in spite of not necessarily being that. Kodie knew that an early age portraying gangsta-rap was not his craze. He loved martial arts and he was a big fan of great fighters and strugglers. He wanted to develop and promote an image based on his reality. On those grounds, he applied his boxing in his music and concluded a logic of his own. He named this motto “FIGHT LIFE” and the catch-phrase was “either you live it up or give it up”. Kodie became the first elite-boxer in Sweden to rap within the elite. This separated and made him stand out from other rappers on the Swedish hip hop scene.
In 2005, Kodie and Al Azif released their mixtape “No Holds Barred” which became a certified underground banger. This mixtape did not receive any bad reviews, on the contrary most reviews rated 4 out of 5 stars and many stated Pennybridge Kingz was the new voice of Swedish Hip Hop in English. The number 1 Scandinavian hip hop magazine Kingsize graced it with positive reviews as well as Swedish Rap legend Timbuktu who talked about it on his radio program P3 Hip Hop and commented ”these guys are really good!”. Kodie’s unique, martial arts hardcore image earned him a performance on the K-1 Rumble of The Kings event which was held at The Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm in 2006. The same year he was awarded the Örebro Län Landsstings Culture Prize which is the biggest culture prize in his hometown (he was given the prize for his work, achievements and contribution with sports, music, education and his work with youth). Kodie has always been interested in working with young people and guiding them to find their path; be the best they can be. He released his solo mixtape “The Sweet Scientist” in 2007 and was enormously praised for it.
Kodies achievements in his boxing career range from participating in the Swedish national team to winning the best junior boxer in Angered Centrum Box Cup, which that year (2002) was the biggest boxing tournament in the whole Europe. He is also a 4 time Swedish champion and countless other titles. He was acclaimed the second best welterweight in the country when he retired in 2005.
A decade of consistency transpires on the Swedish rap scene and Kodie shifts focus from the hardcore style he became recognised for towards a more positive, uplifting content. He keeps perseverance with hope for the future and the will to prevail. Such these are self-motivational techniques he acquired throughout his successful boxing career.
Kodie conveys one message very clearly…”POSITIVITY”
After an extensive 11-years of a triumphant boxing career and 2 years in college, Kodie decided to put his boxing gloves to rest, college studies aside and pursue his absolute dream of working with music; therefore making it his career in a follow-up of releasing his debut album.
Idols such as Stic.man, from the legendary Hip Hop group Dead Prez and the Swedish Hip Hop Icon Dogge Doggelito, inspired Kodie to pursue his music career. Both of them gave him utmost encouragement for his work and admiration for his lyrics and image. Dogge Doggelito took Kodie under his wing and gave him the opportunity to work on a more professional level. He joined Dogge Doggelito on his EXPO 2010 tour in Shanghai where they performed in shows together.
”Dogge taught me so many new things and I got the chance to develop my skills as an artist. I will forever be thankful for the help he gave me”
